IBM Lego Robotics
Instructors: Riley Buchheit & Gabby Ashton Lego Robotics is about inspiring youth through a hands-on STEM learning experience. Students will discover, explore and be challenged to understand the basics of STEM and to apply their skills in a final competition while building habits of learning, how to overcome failure, confidence, and teamwork skills along the way. The Lego Robotics program runs September 29th through December 9th. Students will become familiar with the robots and the programming environment by following the curriculum IBM has provided. In mid-October IBM will introduce the long term project. The students will work on the long term project from mid-October through to the final competition on December 9th. The final competition will be held at the RCTC Field House in Rochester. This year students have the option to sign up for Beginner, Standard, or Advanced programs. Beginner is designed for students who are in grades 4 or 5 or are very new to the program. Students who sign up for Beginner Maroon will attend practices on Tuesdays; students who sign-up for Beginner Gold will attend practices on Wednesdays. With the help of Schmitty & Sons Bus Company we are able to offer the option of bussing from BCI to the MS for our Wednesday IBM Lego Robotics students this year. If your child will need transportation from BCI to the MS for practice, please register for the Gold group. Standard is aimed towards students in grades 6-8 who are looking for a challenge. Advanced offers the most complex challenges and is designed for students in grades 9-12. In this class, we will review some basics (letters, numbers, introductions) and then learn new signs about nature, travel, and our community! Family Signing Time
Instructor: Tracie RiederLong before children can speak, they communicate through facial expressions, body language, and gestures. Family Signing Time builds on these natural forms of communication by introducing families to American Sign Language (ASL) in a fun, interactive way. Research has shown that using signs consistently with young children can support early communication and language development, reduce frustration by giving children a way to express their needs, and strengthen the bond between parents and children. Kids also benefit from learning sign language by building vocabulary, supporting early literacy, enhancing communication skills, and fostering empathy and inclusion for members of the Deaf community and others who utilize ASL to communicate. In each class, families will learn practical, everyday signs (from American Sign Language) through stories, songs, games, and movement activities. You'll leave with signs you can begin using at home right away, along with ideas for incorporating sign language into your daily routines. Discover the beauty of sign language while creating meaningful moments of connection with your child. Child & Babysitting Safety Class (CABS)
Instructor: Lori Hameister The Child and Babysitting Safety (CABS) program from the American Safety and Health Institute provides everything you need to know for safe and successful babysitting. The YouTube “vlogger” style presentation of the video brings a youthful and high-energy spirit to the program content along with handouts, demonstrations, and additional resources. At the end of class, the students will receive their certification card along with instructions to access a digital copy of the Child and Babysitting Safety (CABS) Student book. From getting started with your business, to collaborating with parents and children, to key safety, caregiving, and first aid tips, CABS will help set you up for babysitting success. Students must be present for the entire class and complete achievement of the core learning objectives to receive certification valid for two years. Whether it's for an hour after school or several hours a day during the summer, being trusted to be home alone can be a positive experience for a child who is mature and well prepared. This class for children will address several topics relating to being "home alone" including age guidelines, safe habits, house rules, after school routines, phone calls and door knocks, dog emergencies, personal safety, handling the unexpected, gun safety, severe weather, fire safety, intruders, and first aid tips.
